Citroen DS3 Sport e-THP 120kw – A compact progressive hatch for the individual
Citroen SA introduced five new models into the DS3 range in June 2015. We tested the range topping Sport model that goes up against the Mini Cooper S, Fiat Abarth 599, Fiesta ST and Polo GTI and found that Citroen has indeed raised their game in the South African market.
Appearance
The DS3 Sport is instantly recognizable amongst its rivals with its floating roof and shark fin style C pillar design. The DS3 can be spec’ed with a choice of either a white or black roof and is available in seven different colours. Other exterior changes can be added as well such as colour-coded mirrors and different vinyl packages. The Sport has also seen the addition of DS LED Vision headlamps, these are a combination of Xenon and LED modules which create a distinctive new lighting signature.
A set of 17-inch Belone mag wheels, in black, come as standard while the various chrome detailing strips around the vehicle offset the dark tinted windows.
Around the back the DS3’s styling retains the theme with dual chrome exhaust tips, chrome detailing and 3D rear tail lights as well as a rear spoiler with integrated brake light.
Interior and Safety
The interior sees the biggest changes in the DS3. With the Sport, the cloth and Alcantara interior has been dropped in favour of full leather. The soft touch dashboard, with its optional colour coded panels, houses the Bluetooth-enabled 6-speaker CD/MP3 Hi-Fi entertainment system. Citroen’s MyWay navigation comes as standard as well as an array of functionality with the on-board vehicle computer.
The centre console sees a 12V outlet, USB connection and a foldable armrest. Citroen has also made standard the automatic air conditioning, one touch electric windows, cruise control, height and reach adjustable steering column and rear parking sensors for convenience.
Access to the roomy rear seat is also a breeze with the large doors, the seats also feature full inertia reel seatbelts and 9ISOFIX car seat attachment points. Safety is of utmost importance and a bevy of airbags can be found throughout.
The Citroen DS3 also features ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) as well as self-locking doors for when the vehicle is in motion.
Engine and Transmission
With five models on offer, Citroen has put four engines, two transmissions and the combination thereof, into the model lineup.
We had the 120kW e-THP Sport on test and the combination of the 240Nm four cylinder 1600cc turbocharged motor and six-speed manual gearbox was an absolute treat.
With a combined cycle of just 5.1l/100km and emissions of 129g/km, the e-THP Sport is as frugal as a small performance sub-hatch can be.
Overview
The DS3 takes on the likes of Ford, Volkswagen and Fiat in the warm hatch category and on a price point is very competitive. When put up against its closest rival in the Mini Cooper S, it is comparable in size and power but comes in a lot cheaper.
As long as PCSA continues to change their brands perceptions in South Africa, Citroen will continue to grow from strength to strength, leaving a dark period in their history behind. The DS3 e-THP Sport is making that happen.
